Sunshine Shocker At SAG Awards

The 13th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were a pretty ho-hum affair until the final award of the night was presented.

Forest Whitaker as Best Actor? Check.

Helen Mirren as Best Actess? Check.

Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy in the Best Supporting categories? Check.

Yes, the Oscar front-runners were all picking up their umpteenth awards, until the shocker of the evening came.

Little Miss Sunshine became the “little movie that could” when it was announced as the winner for Best Ensemble Cast in a Feature Film.

Does that mean Sunshine is now a serious Oscar contender? Could be...Crash won the same SAG Award last year and went on to upset Brokeback Mountain for Best Picture at the Oscars. But keep in mind, only actors vote for the SAG Awards, while every Oscar voter is allowed to vote in the Best Picture category.

One thing is for sure, however – for the first time in a long time, the Oscar race for Best Picture is wide open, with all five nominees having a legitimate shot at bringing home the gold.

Kidman OK After On-Set Accident

Actress Nicole Kidman was taken to the hospital after she crashed a Jaguar she was driving during the filming of her latest movie, The Invasion. The car in question was being towed by a camera rig that skidded, causing the car to crash into a pole at about 45 m.p.h.

Kidman, along with seven others, were taken to the hospital for examination, and all reportedly were released with no serious injuries.

The Invasion is about an attempted alien takeover of Earth, and is one of Warner Bros. "tent pole" films for the summer of 2007. The movie co-stars Daniel Craig as is scheduled for release in August.

Oscar Nominations Announced

The nominations for the 79th Academy Awards were announced this morning, with Dreamgirls leading the pack with a total of eight nominations, including one for Best Supporting Actor for Eddie Murphy.

There was no Best Picture nod for Dreamgirls however, and the eight nominations is a bit misleading – since three of those come within the Original Song category. Other multiple nominated films include Babel (7 nominations); Pan’s Labyrinth (6 nominations); and The Queen (6 nominations).

The five nominees for Best Picture are Babel; The Departed; Letters From Iwo Jima; Little Miss Sunshine; and The Queen.

Basic Instinct 2 Leads Razzie Nominations

Sharon Stone may be an Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner for her work in Casino, but she's also now a seven-time nominee for the annual Razzie Awards - the annual celebration of the year's worst films.

This time around, Stone gets the nod for her work in Basic Instinct 2, a movie that flopped at the box office, and also picked up Razzie nominations for Worst Picture, Worst Supporting Actor (David Thewlis), Worst Director (Michael Caton-Jones), Worst Screenplay, Worst Sequel, and Worst Screen Couple (for Ms. Stone's...ahem..."Golden Globes"!).

The other Worst Picture nominees were BloodRayne; Lady In The Water; Little Man; and The Wicker Man.

The winners of this year's Razzies are announced on February 24th, the day before that "other" awards show!

"I Don't Know How To Do This Anymore..."

After 20 months at the hands of Chinese torturers, Jack Bauer returned to the United States in last night’s stunning 2-hour premiere of 24 on FOX.

Battered, scarred and barely audible, Jack was brought back as part of a deal in which he would sacrifice his own life to learn the location of Middle Eastern terrorist Hamri Al-Assad - believed to be behind 11-weeks worth of attacks within the United States.

But when Jack learned the man who wanted him dead, Abu Fayed, was actually behind the attacks, a glimpse of the old Jack Bauer resurfaced, as he escaped and went off to warn Al-Assad that he was in danger.

When it came to getting information from a traitor in Al-Assad’s group, Jack could no longer muster the will power – perhaps a result of being tortured himself for so long. Instead, Al-Assad got the needed information.

So instead of a gung-ho Jack Bauer, this season of 24 brings us a haunted one...willing to die for his country – as long as it’s for a reason.

Day 6 continues on FOX tonight at 8/7c.

James Cameron Back Behind The Camera

Director James Cameron hasn't helmed a motion picture (aside from a few documentaries) since 1997's Titanic, but will be behind the lens again for Avatar, due for release sometime in 2009.

The story, which was written by Cameron, tells the tale of a Marine sent to a strange world against his wishes. There, he gets caught up in a battle of survival with the planet's inhabitants.

The movie is a combination between live-action and animation, which Cameron promises will "blow you to the back wall of the theatre in a way you haven't seen for a long time". Cameron has spent years perfecting the "look" of the special effects that will be seen in Avatar.

The movie is set to star relative unknowns Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana.

Principal visual photography for the $200 million movie begins in April, with live-action filming set for August.
