Atonement Leads Golden Globe Nods
The British World War II drama Atonement led the 2008 Golden Globe nominations, which were announced earlier this morning. Atonement is adapted from the Ian McEwan novel of the same name and tells the story of two lovers whose romance falls apart when the younger sister of the female half of the couple accuses the male of a horrendous crime.Included in the nominations for Atonement are ones for Best Motion Picture (Drama); Best Actress (Keira Knightley); Best Actor (James McAvoy); Best Supporting Actress (Saoirse Ronan); and Best Director (Joe Wright).
Also nominated for Best Picture (Drama) were the films American Gangster; Eastern Promises; The Great Debaters; Michael Clayton; No Country For Old Men; and There Will Be Blood. The nominees for Best Picture (Comedy or Musical) consisted of Across The Universe; Charlie Wilson’s War; Hairspray; Juno; and Sweeney Todd.
In the television categories, FX Network’s Damages and the HBO film Longford led the way, with four nominations each. Damages’ nominations included ones for Best Television Series (Drama) and Best Actress (Glenn Close); while Longford’s nods included ones for Best Made For Television Mini-Series or Motion Picture and Best Actor (Jim Broadbent).
